Brownfield sites are disused industrial areas where economic activities are severely impeded or rendered impossible due to historic contamination.
DEC and Ecoterres have handled many challenging projects. One of these was the remediation of the Avenue Coking Works in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, in the UK, which had been dubbed one of the most polluted sites in Europe. The Avenue Coking Works was a fully integrated plant producing smokeless fuels and processing by-products that were produced through the carbonisation of coal.
Another major site remediation project was for the London Olympics site. There had been intense industrial activity for centuries at the site, leading to widespread contamination of the soil and groundwater.
In total 1.1 million tonnes of contaminated soil were treated. DEC deployed soil washing, bioremediation and stabilisation/solidification technologies.
