DP Marine Energy and DEME Blue Energy Consortium Successful in tender
Belfast, 10 October 2012 - The DP Marine Energy and DEME Blue Energy development consortium (DPME/DBE) has added a further marine energy project to its West Islay tidal project off South West Scotland with the award of an Agreement for Lease from The Crown Estate for a 100MW tidal project off the northwest coast of Antrim at Fair Head in Northern Ireland. Both projects have significant energy resource developed by the same waters flooding and ebbing between the North Atlantic and the Irish Sea and both form part of the North Channel resource area.
The Fair Head tidal project is conceived around the use of 100 1MW power train turbines with differing support structure designs based on the variable water depths across the site. Preliminary layouts have been outlined utilizing the three bladed horizontal axis Siemens MCT power trains mounted on both fixed tower structures or on floating support structures where the depths exceed 40m. Final designs and turbine selection will depend on the specific site conditions and the suitability of the various designs for the specific location, and will also be informed by the environmental constraints identified through the Environmental Impact Assessment Process and feedback from other sea users and stakeholders.
The parties within the DPME/DBE consortium bring a diverse range of complementary skills and together a substantial breadth of development experience in renewable energy projects and offshore construction. The consortium has a goal of being one of the leading marine energy development ventures both in the UK and Ireland, and within Europe but also further afield. The combined North Channel projects of Islay and Fair Head with a current expected capacity of 130MW and an aspirational capacity of 400MW + provide a starting block for its future ambitions.
DBE (DEME Blue Energy)
DEME Blue Energy (DEME Dredging, Environmental & Marine Engineering and PMV Participatie Maatschappij Vlaanderen) is a specialized company that focuses on the development of energy generated from waves, tidal movements and tidal currents. DBE plays a pioneering role in the development of wave energy convertors and tidal energy convertors. DBE closely cooperates with academic centres of knowledge.
DEME Blue Energy is a subsidiary of the Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group DEME which has a prominent position on the world market in a number of highly specialized and complex hydraulic disciplines. The DEME Group diversified from dredging operations and land reclamation to marine engineering solutions at sea, services to oil and gas companies, installation of offshore wind farms, environmental activities such as soil remediation, recycling of dredged materials and remediation of brownfields and wreck clearance. The Group has one of the most modern, high-tech and versatile fleets for dredging and marine engineering. The Belgian Group is implementing more than 70 projects simultaneously in over 50 countries around the world.
DEME’s offshore marine construction specialist GeoSea has a track record of 35 years in innovative development and expertise in all complex offshore constructions. With wind farms in European waters Samsoe, Borkum West, Walney, Ormonde, C-Power, Baltic II, Northwind, Alpha Ventus on order or completed, GeoSea lays the foundations of 1.432MW of offshore wind. GeoSea will further perform work on the 3 Belgian offshore wind farm concessions RENTEL, SEASTAR and MERMAID which the DEME Group has recently acquired together with other partners within OTARY nv such as NUHMA.
PMV invests in the economic fabric of Flanders and stimulates Flemish businesses to develop their knowhow and to export it abroad. PMV provides venture capital, private equity, mezzanine financing, guarantees and public private partnerships. Particular emphasis is placed on sustainable energy, biotech, clean technology, life sciences and infrastructure for the future. PMV manages a portfolio of EUR 900 million in assets. (www.pmv.eu)
DP Marine Energy Limited (DPME)
DPME is an Irish Company based in County Cork and is one of a number of energy companies in the DP Group (DP Energy). DP Energy has more than two decades of experience of developing renewable energy projects and is committed to developments, which are both sustainable and environmentally benign. The Companies in the group carry out full “start to finish” developments of renewable energy projects, operating either independently or in partnership with other companies in joint venture structures. DP Energy Ireland Ltd has operated for many years in the wind energy sector. The company has developed over 180 MW of built wind energy project comprising 114 turbines and has developed a further 107MW with planning consents and grid connection offers which are either in build or ready to build within the next two years. In addition, DP Energy is progressing a further 500MW of wind projects in the UK, Canada and Australia, which are at various stages of development.
In the Marine field, marine energy developments are carried out by DPME which is actively exploring a number of sites in the UK, Ireland and elsewhere for the development of utility scale marine energy projects. It is currently progressing the development of a 30 MW tidal energy park off the west coast of Islay pursuant to an Agreement for Lease with The Crown Estate.
