BHP Billiton Iron Ore Pty Ltd requested GeoSea Australia to perform an offshore site investigation off the coast of Finucane Island (Port Hedland – Australia). The site investigation was needed for the final design of a 4km long iron ore jetty , a transfer deck structure, an operating wharf structure , berthing and mooring dolphins as well as for the design of the access channel. High quality samples from the heterogeneous soils and rocks (calcarenites, breccia, sandstones) and borehole SPT tests were required enabling the engineer to assess pile drivabilities and soil dregabilities.
GeoSea used its jack up platform Zeebouwer to perform the challenging site investigation works. Thanks to its fully retractable legs, the Zeebouwer was able to access extremely shallow sampling locations as well. Eighty nine deep boreholes including continuous sampling and SPT tests were performed in eight months. Boreholes were drilled up to 30 miles off the coast of Port Hedland.
