Sand spraying as a measure against phosphate loads

By order of the District Water Control Board for Schieland and Krimpenerwaard, the works at Bergse Voorplas were completed at the end of 2011. It concerned the blinding (100,000 m3) of approx. 40 ha of sediment with sand, in this case in combination with PAC (polyaluminium chloride).

The project took place in the framework of the KRW innovation programme and the Watermozaïek theme ‘De bodem bedekt’ (‘Covering the bed’). The measure is intended to reduce the phosphate load from the spoil to the water column above.

Taking into account the good results obtained, de Vries & van de Wiel, together with Witteveen+Bos and the District Water Control Board for Schieland and Krimpenerwaard, has organised two symposiums this year intended for water boards to share knowledge and experience.

During the meetings, other possibilities and advantages offered by sand spraying were discussed as well, such as sustainability thanks to low CO2 emissions, remediation by covering contamination, consolidation/ballasting, stabilisation and land reclamation.
