At Westervoort, in a floodplain on the river IJssel, the river has been widened. De Vries & van de Wiel moved an embankment, made a temporary dam and created a high water channel. Besides remediation works, houses were demolished as well.
As a result of the works, the water distribution between the IJssel and the Lower Rhine has improved. Hondsbroeksche Pleij plays a crucial role in the water distribution between both rivers.
The IJssel has literally been given more room by lowering the Veerdam and other parts of the surrounding land. Once the works were finished, a high water channel was created for the water to run through.
