Congo River (Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger) on Eko Atlantic City project

Challenge

Eko Atlantic City is a new district of Lagos, which has been constructed on land reclaimed by DEME from the Atlantic Ocean. Located on Lagos’ Bar Beach, it is anticipated that some 250,000 people will be residents there and 400,000 commuters will flow to and from the island on a daily basis. In addition, the development will also have a positive environmental impact because it helps to stop the erosion of Lagos’ coastline.

Adjacent to Victoria Island, Eko Atlantic City will fulfil the need for financial, commercial, residential and tourist accommodation and will have state-of-the-art, high-tech infrastructure in line with modern and environmental standards. This will ensure that the city’s residents have the latest water, waste management, security and transportation systems. Eko Atlantic will also offer its residents an independent source of energy generated specifically for the City.

Solution

The original coastline was reinstated after many decennia of coastal land loss due to the powerful Atlantic Ocean’s erosive impact by establishing an 8-km long breakwater, known as the “Great Wall of Lagos”. DEME then began the mammoth task of creating new land for the future behind this breakwater.

Executed in phases, the project was carried out between December 2009 and May 2019 by our extensive and high-tech, trailer suction hopper dredger fleet using a full range of reclamation techniques. Ultimately, a total volume of more than 100,000,000 m³ of material and 9 km² was reclaimed.

Our R&D and production departments studied the entire process closely in order to define the best and most cost-efficient reclamation method based on the deployment of our modern dredgers. This enabled us to offer our customer numerous possibilities. We faced several challenges such as the abrasiveness of the dredged material, the optimisation of the pumping distance and the management of the dredging cycle, as we were working in very busy shipping areas.

It is safe to say that the contractor’s involvement has been an important factor in the optimisation process and influenced the feasibility and continuation of the project. Moreover, the coordination efforts made by DEME’s on-site staff with the local authorities meant that the project management went smoothly.

As well as our high-tech, mega-equipment, the close cooperation with the customer defined the project and indeed this prestigious project highlights the creative and innovative spirit shown by the DEME team on site and our R&D department.
