Overview of the port of Tanger

Challenge

The Tangier Mediterranean Special Agency (TMSA) awarded the extension of the Tanger Med Port complex to the consortium BSTM-TMBYS.

The general scope of work included:

  • The basic infrastructure of the port, particularly the main and secondary breakwaters, as well as the digging and dredging of the basins.
  • Part of the operational infrastructure of the port including, the quay walls and foundations.

The project was split into two different phases, with the first phase involving the construction of most of the protection breakwaters, as well as a container terminal (TC4).

Within the consortium, BSTM (Besix-Somagec) was responsible for the construction of TC4’s 1,200 m long quay walls, the dredging works in the harbour basin and reclamation area and TMBYS (Bouygues-Saipem-Bymaro) had to construct the main and secondary breakwaters. Boskalis International worked as a subcontractor for BSTM. DEME worked as a subcontractor for TMBYS.

Solution

DEME was in turn contracted by BSTM (BESIX-SOMAGEC) to dredge sand to fill the caissons and reclamation works, as well as by TMBYS (Tanger Met Bouyues & Saipem) to perform the dredging works for the access channel, turning basin and berths.

Our scope of works comprised:

  • Dredging sand for filling the caissons installed for the construction of the main breakwater.

We dredged approximately 300,000 m³ by deploying a small, trailing suction hopper dredger.

  • Reclamation of a platform of approximately 700,000 m³ at the end of the project.

This was performed by a trailing suction hopper dredger with a capacity of 13,700 m³.

  • All reclaimed materials were sourced from our own Borrow Area in front of Tanger Med II.
  • Dredging of the access channel, turning basin and berths. Our heavy duty cutter suction dredger 'Ambiorix' was required due to the presence of rock outcrops in the dredging area. We loaded the dredged material into the 2,700 m³ split hopper barges 'Sloeber' and 'Pagadder' and dumped it offshore, at a location 2.5NM sailing distance away.
  • We achieved the final level with our trailing suction hopper dredger 'Marieke' and Multicat 'Buckingham' (equipped with a plough).
